Film releases
France In London Newsletter 01/01/1970
The film will be shown in tandem with the director Julian Schnabel’s earlier film, a profile of the artist Basquiat.
On 8 December 1995, at age 43, Jean-Dominique Bauby, inventive and charismatic editor-in-chief of the French magazine Elle suffered a massive stroke. After lapsing into a coma, he awoke 20 days later to find himself a victim of ‘locked-in syndrome’ – mentally alert but a prisoner inside his own body, his only means of communicating with the outside world the blinking of his left eye.
This remarkable movie is based on a true story.
On general release from 8th February.

Read our interview with Julian Schnabel.

Talks
France In London Newsletter 01/01/1970
Pierre Bayard will be discussing  his latest book 'How to talk about books you haven’t read' (Minuit, 2007; Granta, 2008), a massive best-seller in France and New York last year (where 20,000 copies were sold in just three weeks) at the French Institute.
Pierre Bayard argues that it’s more important to know the location of a book in our culture and its relationship to other books than to have actually read it, and underpins his argument with discussions of tests from Oscar Wilde to Montaigne to Graham Greene.

Gilles Leroy, prix Goncourt 2007, will discuss his latest novel Alabama Song (Mercure de France, 2007), and his career to date. He will be in conversation with Boyd Tonkin, arts broadcaster and literary editor of The Independent since 1996.
Alabama Song is the fictional autobiography of Zelda Sayre, wife of the famed novelist F Scott Fitzgerald. Told in the first person, it retraces her escape, through Fitzgerald, from her ultra-conservative background in the American South, the wild parties of 1920s New York, Paris and the Riviera, her volcanic relationship with her husband and her decades-long battle with mental illness.

Cecilia no longer coming to London?!
A few weeks ago we were all speculating about  the ex Mrs Sarkozy  coming to London, it would appear now that this is no longer the case. She might have opted to go to Switzerland in the end. Is it true? Or has she simply decided  to stay in Paris of the controversy surrounding the future release of her book, as well as all the press coverage about her ex's love life and a possible marriage. It might not be such a bad idea. There isn't a day without some mention of President's Sarkozy's personal affaires. He is consistently making the front cover of the people magazine's and the press doesn't seem to get enough of him.

Quentin Blake made Officier des Arts et des Lettres
On the opening day of the Youth Festival, Quentin Blake was made officer de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in the French Legion d'Honneur. Daniel Pennac, also one of his friends, had been asked to serve him with this honnor on behalf of the French Government. This event was preceded by a rather fun discussion between Blake and Pennac.

Gad Elmaleh sold out
If you were thinking of going to see Gad on 17th March, you might find that is is now too late. The show is sold out. This is not a very big surprise given the success of his latest show in Paris.
