In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the birth of one of France’s most versatile directors: René Clément, STUDIOCANAL have released 4 of Clément's films FORBIDDEN GAMES, GERVAISE, THE DEADLY TRAP and AND HOPE TO DIE all UK DVD premieres.

Described as the French Hitchcock, René Clément was one of France’s great post-World War II era directors. Studying as an architect originally, it was at the Ecole-des-Beaux-Arts that he developed an interest in filmmaking. In 1936 he directed his first film – a short written by and starring Jacques Tati. Clément then spent most of the latter part of the 1930s making documentaries. After the war he directed his first feature: La Bataille du rail (1945), about the French resistance, which was a critical and commercial success. He twice won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film – including Forbidden Games, along with many other awards throughout his career.

  • FORBIDDEN GAMES on DVD/ BLU-RAY

Perhaps one of the most touching film ever made by René Clément based on Francois Boyer's novel, Les Jeux Interdits.

The plot:

It is June 1940, during the Battle of France. After five-year-old Paulette's parents and pet dog die in a German air attack on a column of refugees fleeing Paris, the traumatized child meets 10-year-old Michel Dollé whose peasant family takes her in. She quickly becomes attached to Michel. The two attempt to cope with the death and destruction that surrounds them by secretly building a small cemetery among the ruins of an abandoned barn, where they bury her dog and start to bury other animals, marking their graves with crosses stolen from a local graveyard, including one belonging to Michel's brother...

  • GERVAISE on DVD

The Plot

Gervaise is based on Émile Zola's novel L'Assommoir. It depicts a working-class woman in the mid-nineteenth century trying to cope with the descent of her husband into alcoholism

  • THE DEADLY TRAP on DVD

The Plot

Jill is surprised and angry when her computer-genius boyfriend decides to quit his job in a big company for unclear reasons. But when her children mysteriously disappear and may have been kidnapped, she wants to find out why, and discovers that she may be caught in a DEADLY TRAP...

  • AND HOPE TO DIE on DVD

The Plot

A crook on the run hooks up with a criminal gang to commit a kidnapping. However, things don't go quite as planned.

Time to re-evaluate his work Bataille du Rail has hardly ever been seen outside France.

Rene Clement made 20 films some of which - like Knave of Hearts, shot in England with Gerard Philippe as the eponymous ladies' man, and Lr Jour et l'heure, with Simone Signoret - have become neglected, whilst others like Paris - Brule e - t'il were unable to sustain the burden of 50 international stars. Les Maudits is also unjustly forgotten and is well worth seeking out.

Continental movies often have unique sort of charm.

A classic!
And the music is so famous too.
