L'Institut français au Royaume Uni a 100 ans!

From 26/01/2010 to 28/02/2010 at 23:59

This year, the French Institute is celebrating its centenary with a series of special events. The institute, founded in 1910 by young 19-year-old visionary women, Marie d'Orliac, is one of the oldest of its kind in the world.

At the opening reception hosted at the Residence de France on 12th January 2010, the French Ambassador Maurice Gourdault-Montagne introduced the eminent British and French members who have agreed to serve on the centenary celebrations honorary committee.

Over the years, the Institute primary role has not changed: it has remained the official French Government Centre for Language and Culture in the UK with a view to promoting French language and culture and to encouraging cultural diversity as well as nourishing new talent.

Many great figures have passed through its doors, among them, Jean Renoir, Eugene Ionesco, Jacques Lacan, ...Catherine Deneuve also came last year to re-open the newly refurbished Ciné Lumière.

The amazing art Deco building which now houses the Institute was inaugurated in 1939 and when De Gaulle arrived in London, the institute was made available to the Free French Forces.
