I have a full set of cotton signal flags which are stored individually in a carrying pouch, which my father purchased from Captain Watts 60 years ago or more.

Still serviceable after all these years!

I worked for Capt. Watts at his Albermarle Street shop in the summer of 1971. He was a good boss but a hard task master. It was an experience to say the least. I remember been given proofs of Reeds to check over for him as he was editor of the yearly tome at that time.

I've just had a quick look at the frontage of 49 Albemarle Street using Google Earth. It looks pretty much as I remember it. the varnished double doors to the stairs up to the First and 2nd floor showrooms, with stockroom and offices and a flat above. God, thinking back -I find it difficult to believe that I haven't seen that since 1958!

I worked for Capt.O.M. Watts at 49 Albemarle Street from 1955 to 1958.Nice man, good Boss. He had a secretary named Miss Withams who was probably in her 20's then. Occasionally, he'd invite shop staff down to Beaulieu to crew on his converted MFV for a weekend. I enjoyed a couple of days out around the isle of Wight crewing for him during Cowes Week; and IIRC, enjoyed at least 2 cruises across to France crewing for him, as well. I left the shop early in 1958 [to work on a M/L. conversion for Charter, being done in St. Aubin, Jersey], and never had occasion to visit the shop again after that. But I've still got some of the stuff I bought there on Staff Discount.

I worked as a Saturday boy during the early 1970's at Captain OM Watts. He was a remarkable man. We often had chats during my time spent working at his business and shop premises. Passionate & considerate were two of his very obvious traits.

Captain Watts in Dover Street was originally located in Albemarle Street. Sadly, the shop does not exist any more.

Good morning.  My father-in-law frequented your shop many times on numerous trips to London.  He purchases a set of cotton binding signal flags (alpha, numerical and repeaters) which we learned to use.  I stored them when not in use in our wooden boat house at our cottage.  Unfortunately this 60 year old building burnt down last week.  No harm or loss of life however boats and All contents including signal pennants are destroyed.

Do you still have sets available and at what cost for a set of alpha-numeric-repeaters?

Sincerely

Chris Taylor
