François Hollande inaugure le Lycée International Winston Churchill de Wembley
French President, Francois Hollande arrived in London yesterday to formally open the Lycée International Winston Churchill in Wembley. The new lycée officially welcomed its first students on 3rd September 2015. Today, the school has 475 pupils aged between 4 and 16. It will eventually house 1300 students all the way from nursery to the baccalauréat.
Other attendees included: Sir Winston Churchill's grandson, French Senators Olivier Cadic and Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam as well as the French Ambassador to the UK, Mme Sylvie Bermann.
The Lycée International is only the second French Lycée to be built in London in 100 years. The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in South Kensington which currently has in excess of 3000 pupils celebrated its centenary earlier this year.
The new lycée represents a significant strengthening of French culture in London. It is named in honour of Winston Churchill, the famous British war time Prime Minister. 2015 is the 50th anniversary of his death.
The new Wembley Lycée has been built to ensure additional facilities for an ever increasing French population in London. This has now nearly reached 350,000 French nationals thus making it the 5th largest French city in the world after Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse.
Unlike the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle which has two separate sections – one French and the other English - this new lycée is international and pupils will be taught in both French and English.
The Lycee Internantional Winston Churchill, though partly subsidised by the French government, will still be a private school charging approximately £10,000 a year per pupil.
Lycee International - Fees
Maternelle: £10,470 / year* Elementaire: £9,770 / year* Collège: £9,770 / year* Lycée: £10,470 / year* |
*These fees include lunch, insurance and, from Primary onwards, an appropriate tablet device.
It will however be continuing a strong tradition of offering financial aid to families struggling with school fees. In addition, its out of central London location should allow families to find more affordable accommodation nearer the school than that of South Kensington.
After the opening, Monsieur Hollande then went on to meet the British Prime Minister, David Cameron at Chequers, his country residence.

More than 120,000 French Nationals are currently registered with the French Consulate and the number of passports delivered by the consulate has more than double in 5 years. The consulate believes that less than 40% of French Nationals are registered given that very often they only do it because they need their passport renewed, a French national has died or a child has been born.

350,000 French in London, where do you get those figure?
They were 66,654 in 2011 according to national (and mendatory) census.
they can't be 5x in 4 years time!
