The Bride Wore Black
cast: Jeanne Moreau, Michel Bouquet, Jean Claude Brialy, Charles Denner
year: 1968
colour: no
certificate:
director: Francois Truffaut
runtime: 107
Moreau's incarnation of the Truffaut femme fatale continues, in more ferocious and Hitchcockian manner, accompanied by Bernard Herrmann's haunting, Vertigo-style music. Truffaut here adapts another American hardboiled story, by Cornell Woolrich (as William Irish), in which a woman kills five men in revenge for their murder of her husband on her wedding day. Truffaut offsets the darkness of the material with a brilliantly performed gallery of variously comic, predatory or pathetic men.
