Drama/ Thriller "After the suicide of a friend and colleague, the chief detective of the anti-drug squad decides to make a deal with the victim’s main informer in Corneau’s return to the film noir arena which he does without getting trapped in the cliches of the genre. Timsit is as a slippery as he is garrulous as Chabat decides to protect the informer (“Cousin” in French police slang) out of loyalty to one of his partners who has committed suicide rather than face an investigation in to his dealings with the underworld. Corneau reveals the harsh and disturbing realities of police procedures that the authorities naturally would prefer to keep quiet while breathing new life in to his hard-boiled roots. Part of his ploy was casting against type Chabat and Timsit, better known for their comic roles." (Ciné-Lumière/Institut français)
