In a French village during World War II, a communist, atheist widow challenges a charismatic radical priest. Instead of a battle of wills, their relationship develops into an ongoing discussion about the nature of divine grace. Melville's film, based on Beatrice Beck's autobiographical novel, brings his characteristic toughness and leanness to this story of a relationship that is both intellectual and emotional, tentatively growing in the malign shadows of the occupation.
