When the Cat's Away uses the search for a missing cat as a metaphor for exploring the lonely life of Chloé, a make-up artist who lives in rundown suburb of Paris. She hates her job at the model agency and shares a flat with Michel who is gay. Her only companion is a black cat called Gris-Gris that needs a home while she goes on Holiday. Chloé eventually finds the eccentric Mme Renée, who lives with dozens of felines, and agrees to look after the cat. On her return, Chloé learns that the cat is missing...
