Forget the musical – and every other version – Lelouch adapts Hugo daringly (and librally) bringing the story into the 20th century, with bravura performances by Jean-Paul Belmondo and Annie Girardot. The story is relocated to World War Two France, with a group of Jews on the run from the Nazis. Their potential saviour comes in an unlikely form: a simple man who chances upon them on a Parisian highway. Moved by their incredible story, he endeavours to help them escape.
