Bankrobber Franck Adrien serves a prison sentence after successfully robbing a national bank, but before he gets caught he manages to hide the money and it's not just police that are looking for the money. Maurel, his cellmate, is accused of bein a child molester and a killer but he claims that he is innocent.  Maurel is due to be released soon and Franck thinks he can trust him to come to his wife’s rescue and help her out of the financial difficulty she is in now that her money has ran out. 
When he later learns that Maurel is a psychotic killer, Franck becomes anxious for the safety of his wife and daughter - so concerned that he breaks out of prison and goes chasing after him.  But Maurel is no fool and arranges things so that it is Franck who appears to be the marauding killer.  As Franck goes after Maurel in a frantic bid to clear his name, he is in turn hunted by the police who are certain that he is Public Enemy Number One...
