Part companion piece to his own Day for Night and an hommage to Renoir's Carosse d'or, Truffaut's most popular late work, is set in Occupied Paris in 1942. Jewish theatre director Steiner is in hiding while his wife Marion (Deneuve) runs the company by proxy. Marion's engagement of volatile actor Bernard (Depardieu) has implications for the theatre's safety and her own emotional life.
