Suffering and betrayal follow the marriage of an aristrocrat's demure young daughter to a local Norman farmer's son. Julien, a taciturn brute, becomes bored with Jeanne when she threatens his freedom to hunt and philander. Astruc's film adaptation accurately translates the frail and precise despair of Guy de Maupassant's novel while Claude Renoir's (nephew of Jean Renoir) striking colour cinematography, depicting painterly green fields, blue-grey winters and overcast hunting scenes, enhances the mood of growing despair.
