Eugène Green is one of the best-kept secrets of current French cinema - Festival-goers will remember his minimalist mediaeval fantasy The Living World (2003) and Le Pont des Arts (2004). Taking inspiration from a triptych of photographs by Maitetxu Etchevarria, The Signs tells of a family's vigil for a man lost at sea. But the narrative is ultimately a springboard for a poetic, sparely-framed contemplation of presences and absences, faces and spaces, with even the simplest composition achieving an extraordinary grace and mystery.
