Once again adapting a novel by Ruth Rendell (whose A Judgment in Stone became La Céremonie), with The Bridesmaid, Chabrol tells the story of Philippe Tardieu (Benoît Magimel, seen in The Piano Teacher), an ambitious, somewhat straitlaced young man living with his mother and two sisters near the Atlantic coast. His older sister, Sophie, is getting married, and it's at her wedding that Philippe meets Senta (Laura Smet, who was so impressive in Xavier Giannoli's Eager Bodies), one of the bridesmaids. They start a passionate affair, but the more time he spends with her, the more odd she seems, and Senta's intense personality is eventually revealed to be charged with violence. The Bridesmaid (La Demoiselle d'honneur) France, 2004, col, 110 mins, dir. Claude Chabrol, with Benoît Magimel, Laura Smet UK release on Friday 13 May - A Cinefile release -
