A history of French Cinema in 12 easy lessons - 12/04 to 05/07

12 evening classes taking you through the history of French cinema from 1895 to 2016. Using clips, DVDs, discussion, illustrated notes and supporting material physical and on the Internet.

  • Understand how French cinema fits into the history of French and World Cinema
  • Discuss all the above with confidence and articulacy

Class format

The tutor will give short lectures and talks and show a range of film extracts, documentaries and other audio-visual material. You will participate in discussions, presentations and group work. Each session will focus on a particular theme, topic or issue, and the tutor will also offer support by email and the opportunity to access films between classes.

Examples of topics: The Silents / The Thrities / Renoir / The War / The fifties / The New Wave / The Seventies / Eighties / Nineties / 21st century, etc.

Requirements

The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area. You do not need any particular skills but the course will involve some reading.
