Retrospective of French director Jacques Audiard at Ciné Lumière - 21/02-30/03

From 21/02/2016 at 16:20 to 30/03/2016 at 23:30

Ahead of the UK release of Dheepan, Ciné Lumière is offering you a chance to follow the path drawn by Jacques Audiard with a complete retrospective of his filmography as a director.

Audiard gets the ball rolling in the 90's with See How They Fall and A Self-Made Hero (1996 Cannes Film Festival Best Screenplay award) and their most talented lead actors, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Mathieu Kassovitz. Further recognition comes with Read My Lips, winning Emmanuelle Devos - in a unforgettable role facing Vincent Cassel – the Best Actress César award in 2002, and international acclaim with The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet and Rust and Bone, rewarded with a myriad of prizes.
Winning the 68th Palme d’Or in Cannes last year, Dheepan crowns the impeccable track of the French director. And we bet the best is yet to come!

See How They Fall -
Sun 21 Feb 4.20pm & Thu 25 Feb 6.30pm

Simon, a salesman, quits his dead-end job and leaves his family in order to track down the people who shot his best friend and left him in a coma. In the course of his search, his path crosses that of a gambler and a ruthless killer… This clever, noir-ish film won Audiard the César for Best First Feature Film.

A Self-Made Hero -
Sun 28 Feb 4.20pm & Wed 2 Mar 8.40pm

In post-war Paris, Albert Dehousse (Kassovitz) attempts to escape his past taking a new identity. Reinventing himself as a Resistance hero, he is appointed to weed out traitors in France. Overcoming initial hostility from his new colleagues, he soon finds his façade beginning to crack. Audiard’s acute psychological study won the 1996 best screenplay prize in Cannes.

Read My Lips -
Sun 6 Mar 5.00pm & Wed 9 Mar 8.40pm

Carla, a frustrated secretary who is almost deaf, hires a young man recently released from jail to assist her. Together, they get revenge on those who oppress them. Jacques Audiard’s film noir is as disturbing as the pairing of Emmanuelle Devos and Vincent Cassel is sensual.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped -
Sat 12 Mar 3.45pm & Tue 15 Mar 8.40pm

A dishonest estate agent, Thomas seems destined to follow in the footsteps of his thuggish father. One evening, a fortuitous encounter with the former agent of his deceased mother, a famous pianist, reminds him of his childhood dream of becoming one himself. With amazing performances from Duris and Arestrup, this gripping drama won 8 César awards including Best Picture in 2006.

A Prophet -
Wed 23 Mar 8.50pm & Thu 24 Mar 3.00pm

When 19 year-old Malik arrives in jail to serve a 6 years sentence, he is cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang who rules the prison. While carrying out missions for him, he toughens up and secretly develops his own plans. Audiard’s masterpiece has swept the board winning notably the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 2009, and Best Film, Best Actor & Best Director at the 2010 Cesar Awards.

Rust and Bone -
Mon 28 Mar 4.00pm

Given the custody of his young son, Ali leaves Belgium for Antibes to live with his sister and her husband. One evening, he meets Stéphanie, a killer whale trainer. When she suffers a terrible accident, Alain decides to help her, simply, without pity or compassion. Cotillard and Schoenaerts give incredibly powerful performances as these two broken souls seeking redemption in each other.

Dheepan -
Preview screening - Wed 30 Mar 8.40pm

To escape the civil war in Sri Lanka, a former soldier, a young woman and a little girl pose as a family. They end up settling in a suburb of Paris. But the daily violence Dheepan confronts quickly reopens his war wounds. This gripping drama won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2015.
