The Rest is Noise - Paris in the 1920s

From 09/02/2013 to 10/02/2013

Southbank Centre's year-long festival, The Rest is Noise, celebrates the ideas and individuals that shaped 20th century music.  In February, the festival explores Paris, which exerted a pull on artists and intellectuals and became a hotbed of creativity, from which emerged Dadaism and the Surrealists, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Joyce's Ulysses and the salons of Gertrude Stein.

Programme:

  • Jacqueline Rose on on the most quintessential of French novelists, Marcel Proust.

  • A screening of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.

  • Le jazz: Jazz pianist and composer Julian Joseph in conversation about the fascination of jazz and black music for composers such as Stravinsky, Ravel, Milhaud and Poulenc.

  • 15-minute bite-sized talks with subjects including the Moulin Rouge.

  • A talk with Jane Pritchard, curator of the V&A show Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes.
