Le Ballon Rouge and Mon Oncle screened in Dulwich

09/09/2012 from 18:00 to 22:30

The Red Balloon (Le Ballon Rouge) is a 1956 fantasy featurette directed by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse. The thirty-four minute short was filmed in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris.

A boy makes friends with a seemingly sentient balloon, and it begins to follow him. It follows the boy to school, to the bus, and to church. Boy and balloon play together in the streets of Paris and try to elude a gang of boys that wants to destroy the balloon.

The film has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for Lamorisse for writing the Best Original Screenplay in 1956 and the Palme d'Or for short films at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, and there is almost no dialog spoken!

There will be a selection of traditional French sweets to buy and the film will be followed by a balloon release!

Mon Oncle has won seven awards including Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at The Academy Awards in 1959 and Winner Jury Special Prize at Cannes Film Festival in 1958.

Slapstick prevails in Mon Oncle ('My Uncle') when Jacques Tati’s eccentric hero Monsieur Hulot is let loose in the ultramodern home of his brother-in-law. When he visits the technology driven world of his sister and her family, Monsieur Hulot can't quite fit into the surroundings and a delightful satire of mechanical living unfolds.
