Tour de vin – et charité

Londoners are being invited to join or sponsor a national charity cycle ride that aims to raise thousands of pounds for The Prince’s Trust (South West region).
The nine-day ride, totalling more than 650 miles is being organised by the UK’s leading wine merchants, Laithwaites Wine, which has its flagship store at The Arch, Borough Market, London as part of its bid to earn at least £10,000 for the charity this year.
Cyclists, calling themselves the “Grape Crusaders”, will start in England from Laithwaites Wine Gloucester customer call and wine depot and finish at its winery in France, on a ride set to involve stops at all 12 of Laithwaites Wine’s UK wine stores and its 13th store at its winery in Castillon la Bataille, near Bordeaux.
Three Laithwaites Wine staff will cycle the first 287 miles through the UK – then they will hand the baton to another two colleagues who will finish the journey by cycling a further 300 miles, including crossing the Channel, to reach Laithwaites Wine’s only wine store in France.
A young ambassador from The Prince’s Trust, Stephen Truman, is also getting involved, joining in on the last leg of the cycle in the UK.
“The Prince's Trust gave me a positive outlook on life, and I really wanted to give something back to the charity. So I am now a young ambassador for the Trust, helping to promote the good things that they do and I am really excited to be part of this cycle ride helping support Laithwaites Wine on their epic adventure” says Stephen Truman of the opportunity.

From experts to beginners

Anyone interested in cycling, wine or supporting the aims of The Prince’s Trust is invited to join for all or any part of the ride or to sponsor riders - to help raise a final target set at £5,000 – half the total sum that Laithwaites Wine is determined to raise for the charity in 2011.

You can join the ride for any part of its journey, whatever your ability– from the most experienced cyclists able to pedal 100s of miles a day, to novices more comfortable with short distances of just a few miles – or even metres.
In between the cycling, participants will enjoy hospitality from Laithwaites Wine including the chance to sample some of its world famous award winning wines.
Business sponsors wanted

Laithwaites Wine hopes to encourage other companies to join or support the tour and is looking for other business sponsors including any who can supply cyclists with drinks, cycle accessories, over-night accommodation or cars for tour marshals. So far, one of its Italian suppliers, Farnese Vini in Abruzzo, keen cycling competition supporters, has already pledged to sponsor a rider. Car rental company, Rabbits Vehicle Hire is signed up to provide support vehicles and Berkshire Cycles has promised equipment.
Laithwaites Wine chose to join The Prince’s Trust Million Makers fundraising scheme because of its synergy with the aims of the charity. The youth charity helps change young lives by offering those experiencing difficulties with opportunities for education, training, employment and business set-up grants.

Royal links

The headquarters of Laithwaites Wine is in Theale, in the heart of the Royal County of Berkshire and just down the road from the family home of the Duchess of Cambridge (Chapel Row, Bucklebury).
“We feel a particular synergy with the aims of The Prince’s Trust. It aims to help people to get back on track and start their careers rolling so they can then roll by themselves. Tony Laithwaite started the company in 1969 with nothing but himself and a van. His dream was to share his love of wine with others and have fun along the way. Now we are the UK's leading direct wine merchants with a global turnover of more than £340 million – and still led by that same man.” said Anne Linder, Corporate Sponsor for Laithwaites Wine’s Prince’s Trust fundraising programme.
