Speaking in Tongues
From 17/11/2009 to 12/12/2009 at 23:59
Until 12th December at the Duke of York's Theatre
AUSTRALIAN playwright Andrew Bovell is a very talented dramatist who received a warm reception with his play ‘When the rain is falling’ at the Almeida, earlier this year.
Relationships are something that Bovell enjoys exploring as well as looking at what can result from people co-existing.
Speaking In Tongues, opens with two couples in rent-by-the-hour hotels, all prepared to have extramarital sex. What they don’t realise is that their husbands/wives are involved at the same time.
The four actors play nine parts. John Simm, the BAFTA and Oliver nominated actor – better known from TV’s Life On Mars and one of Dr Who’s villain – plays detective Leon Zat, an adulterous cop searching for a missing woman and who ends up rediscovering his love for his wife. But he is also the brooding Nick, an innocent who gives a lost woman a lift. Simm is a fine performer and handles each part with confidence. Other members of the cast, Ian Hart, Kerry Fox and Lucy Cohu are equally impressive but somewhat less convincing.
The play relies heavily on coincidence and is very cleverly staged. However, you feel that as a spectator, you are kept away from getting into the thick of it and you are prevented from getting emotionally involved. Is it due to the dialogues which are somewhat improbable?
Toby Frow, the director, gets the best from his cast by guiding them expertly through this labyrinth.
The Cast: John Simm, Ian Hart, Kerry Fox and Lucy Cohu
John Simm is one of the UK's leading actors, best known for screen-stealing roles in Human Traffic, Doctor Who, Life on Mars and Clocking Off.
In theatre, Simm has appeared in Goldhawk Road, Danny Rule and Elling, for which he earned an Olivier Award and Theatregoers' Choice nomination.
Ian Hart's career highlights include roles as John Lennon in Backbeat and Professor Quirell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, plus stage appearances in 2,000 Feet Away and The Homecoming.
Kerry Fox's varied CV includes acclaimed performances in Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave, Welcome to Sarajevo and the Young Vic's Cruel and Tender.
Lucy Cohu won an Emmy for Best Actress in Forgiven, plus Emmy and BAFTA nominations for her role as Princess Margaret in The Queen’s Sister. She is currently appearing in TV drama Torchwood.
