Damian Lewis leads an outstanding ensemble with Tara Fitzgerald, Keira Knightley and Dominic Rowan in Martin Crimp's blistering version of Molière's greatest comedy, The Misanthrope at the Comedy Theatre.

Transported from 17th century Paris to modern-day London, Alceste (Damian Lewis) is a famous British playwright disillusioned and angry with the hypocrisy, shallowness and vanity of the contemporary world. Vowing to reject society, Alceste's plans are derailed when he falls madly in love with Jennifer (Keira Knightley). An ambitious American film star and darling of the social scene, she may prove to be his biggest challenge yet.

Even my 15 year old son thought it was one of the best plays he had seen and I totally agreed with him. Damian Lewis was mesmarising and Keira Knightley, who had to put on an American accent for her part, was a revelation. She was much better than I had anticipated.

The adaptation was very cleverly done and of course, brought to light that Moliere's was a genius. The subjects covered such as hypocrisy, shallowness and vanity are as appropriate today as they were under Louis XIV.
