From burlesque games to pure clowning around, ‘Le Medecin malgre lui’ (The Doctor despite himself) is a delightful farce in which the woodcutter Sganarelle, successively the duped husband, phony doctor and matchmaker, performs several tours de force. After defeating Geronte, seducing the nanny, buying the trust of young lovebirds Lucinde and Cleante and risking the hangman’s noose, all he has to do is make peace with his wife!

Sganarelle offers Moliere not only a new opportunity to criticize those who pretended to be doctors during that period, but above all the possibility to seek revenge against those cocksure killjoys, portrayed here by Geronte.
