In December, French Institute's Ciné Lumière experiments live music with cinema presenting two classic films with new soundtracks composed and performed live by some of France’s most innovative young musicians.
Olivier Mellano to perform on French cult classic Buffet Froid
Thursday 13th December
Having previously scored Murnau’s Sunrise and Spielberg’s Duel , talented and innovative French musician Olivier Mellano will perform on 13 December in London to accompany live Bertrand Blier's greatest achievment Buffet Froid.
A cult classic in France, Buffet Froid features all the characters and situations of a classic noir, but does away with the explanations, motivations and consequences the audience might usually expect. The result is something like an absurdly hilarious nightmare, with a jumbled progression of surreal incidents following Depardieu’s discovery of his lost penknife in the belly of a fellow subway passenger.
Olivier Mellano is both a first-rate guitarist and violinist and a highly original author/composer/arranger who divides his time between his own projects and collaborations with other top French musicians (Dominique A, Miossec, Yann Tiersen, Laetitia Sheriff, Françoiz Breut, Bed, Psykick Lyrikah). He is the founder and artistic director of L’Ile Electrique, an experimental stage project mixing classical, experimental and rock music, video and contemporary dance, and co-founder with Gaël Desbois of the group Mobiil (Prendre l’eau, 2001, Contre le centre, 2004, and Fondre sur les hyènes, 2007). His latest album, La Chair des anges, was released earlier this year on the Naïve Classique label to enthusiastic reviews.
Come to revisit one of the darkest and most original black comedies amongst contemporary French cinema’s and experiment its live soundtrack as a christmas treat!
