Crisis Shopping
Crisis time doesn’t rhyme with shopping time… I know it sounds terribly unfair but, this year, despite massive sales, you simply can’t afford to act like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and purchase clothes inddiscriminately. You have to refine your objectives. Don’t let yourself get carried away with shopping frenzy, retail therapy is not the right way to fight the anxiety brought upon you thanks to the credit crunch. At least, as far as your wallet is concerned.
Yesterday, I went to the sales without having thought about it and, before I knew it, I had purchased two pairs of shoes and a couple of dresses. Upon going back home and reviewing my purchases, I was simply dumbfounded. Once again I had been trapped by some evil marketing ploy into buying things I absolutely didn't need! Therefore I decided to list the must-haves of this season to check what I already had and what I 'really' needed. Now I just have to find the good deals! What about you? What do you really need?
1- Statement bag
If you don’t have one, hurry up! Bags are not second-rate accessories anymore, they are the key to transforming any outfit into a fashion-miracle. Put your basic black purse in ice right now and choose one which suits you! Fringed, quilted, bright-coloured, with scarves around the strap, oversized, vintage, printed… let’s be inspired!
2- Boyfriend’s jacket
From catwalks to retailers, men’s jackets for women are everywhere and turn to be extremely feminine, even sexy. Relaxed and easy-to-wear, it looks great thrown on over little dresses or skirts, but makes as much of an impact worn with tailored trousers.
3- Fur hat
Fur hats cover all the heads this winter. Some hate this trend, some love it, but everybody has to admit that it is the best way not to loose one’s ears to the weather. So let’s try Russian style!
4- Ankle-boots
More edgy than a knee-high, less formal and more comfortable than stiletto, ankle-boots are simply perfect for those who want to add a little rock pinch into an everyday outfit. A true must-have. And if you don’t believe me, ask Kate Moss.
5- Denim and denim
Forget the old rules, denim on denim looks surprisingly right this winter. With sunglasses it will give you a classy 60s' touch.
6- Tartan
You don’t have anything tartan yet? What kind of fashionista are you? Hurry up!
7- Preppy blazer
The preppy, back-to-school trend is on the top of this season. Let’s be inspired by Gossip Girl’s heroines and get a beautiful blazer. It looks as astonishing with jeans as with skirts and will always get back in fashion. An investment to be made!
8- Headbands
It seems that headbands have become a part of Nicole Ritchie’s hair. Cheap and powerful, headbands could be outstanding. Vintage ones will especially give an added dose of street cred. Nevertheless, approach with caution, they don't suit everybody so trust your instincts- if you feel you're looking a bit too much like an 80s fitness trainer, you probably are.
9- Tulip-skirt
Pencil-skirts are out of fashion, let’s wear tulip-skirts! Don’t you see the difference? I have to admit that, most of the time, neither do I! Obviously it's a skirt which is shaped like the famous flower from Holland. Is it clear for you now ? That means a skirt which is clinched at the waist, ballooning slightly outwards in the middle and tapering down. Be cautious, though undoubtedly glam, it has also been known to be less than flattering.
10- Carrie Bradshaw’s dress
This year girly prom dresses have definitely debunked the little black one. Add a little boldness to your wardrobe! Let’s try Carrie Bradshaw’s style! Bright coloured, asymmetrical, printed, with only one shoulder… just dare it!
11- Grey and Purple
Purple accents grey nicely. Wearing the two together is always a good choice and, with this fashion trend, you could easily avoid any faux-pas.
12- Floral skirt
When it comes to floral, don’t make the mistake of wearing it from head to toe, very VERY few can carry this off.
13- Boyfriend jeans
Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon have paved the way but I’m still hesitant about this trend which is really hard to get right… To be tried.
14- Bows and bows
Bows are already fashionable but this phenomenon is going to be larger next summer. Just take a bow, as Rihanna says and don’t be afraid of its size, oversized ones are the most fashionable.
15- High heels
Sorry ladies, heels have to be high this season. Don’t even think of your summer’s wedge shoes, they went totally out of fashion. Richelieu, derbies and stiletto are your new creed.
16- Sarouel trousers
This season sarouel trousers are right on-trend in new knitted designs. And, who would have believed it, they actually look quite smart.
17- Patterned tights
Adorn your legs with colours or lace to brave the winter weather! Glam rock or tie and dye statement tights are like a second skin. Let’s play!
18- Plastic shoes
You got it right: plastic shoes. I know it sounds weird but plastic could be the new leather. Ask Vivienne Westwood or Marc Jacobs… And you, will you dare?
19- Leopard prints
These last two trends are reserved for expert fashonistas. First leopard prints. Leopard print clothing is a fashion trend that has steadily grown this summer, and will continue to be prominent through the autumn and winter. Sexy or rock’n roll, it’s up to you!
20- Jumpsuit
Harder to wear, the jumpsuit. Its arrival on the catwalk was extremely surprising but here we are: jumpsuits are at the top of the fashion ladder and for two more seasons. I simply don't have the courage but what about you? Gwynneth Paltrow certainly carried it off...
So... ready to go to the sales?
