Oscars, Golden Globes: what's the difference?
What is the point of organizing two different nights to reward Hollywood movies? The main difference between the two ceremonies is how they work. The Oscars are awarded by 6000 cinema professionals, members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Actors, directors, screenwriters and others name artists in their respective fields. They all then submit 5 movies for the best picture award. During the Oscars, there is a glamorous and serious atmosphere, while during the Golden Globes, celebrities have more fun together.
The Golden Globes are awarded by the 90 journalists who are members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This ceremony was created in 1944 to promote Hollywood movies in the rest of the world. The members of the association are not from the USA, which can help put non-American productions under the spotlight. The Golden Globes take place a few weeks before the Oscars and are really appreciated by celebrities as the ceremony advertises them and may, as some often suggest, influence the Academy Awards' nominations.
Both ceremonies award similar prizes, such as the prize for best actor/actress in a supporting role, the best music or the best animated movie. There also are some variations. For instance, the Golden Globes choose to separate comedies and dramas for the best movie and the best actor/actress. The Academy Awards reward short-films while the Golden Globes devotes some of the ceremony to TV shows.
When ceremony rhymes with controversy
This year, the Oscars dominated the headlines about racism because no one of colour was nominated in any category for the second year in a row. Several stars such as Will Smith and his wife, claimed they would boycott the ceremony the minute the list of nominees was out. Chris Rock, the host for the Oscars, made sure during his opening monologue, that his frustration was felt. He described the Oscars as the “White People’s Choice Awards.” The Academy is composed of 94% white people. Right after this controversy spread, the Academy claimed that their objectives was to bring “a greater cultural diversity among all our nominees in all of our categories” responded the Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. She also pointed out that by 2020 the mix of jury will be improved to include more women and that more minotories will be represented.
So what about the the Golden Globes? Are they above board? Well not really, in 2011, the awards got noticed due to suspicion of corruption. The ceremony was hosted by Ricky Gervais, and members of the HFPA reported that certain members of the jury may have voted for some nominees in exchange for gifts from the studios. Indeed, the public was surprised by some nominations. The movie The Tourist, for example, was in the “best comedy” list, whereas it flopped with both audience and the media. The main actor Johnny Depp was also nominated twice in that year, for the best actor prize, for his role in The Tourist and in Alice in Wonderland.
Si in a nut shell, although the Golden Globes make the front page of most newspapers, they are considered as a door opener to the Oscars, the most watched ceremony in the United States and symbol of Hollywood glamour.
