Invictus Games in London: “For our wounded warriors”
“It is going to be an inspirational event and you don’t want to miss it”. Four hundred athletes, thirteen nations, four days of competition, the Invictus Games promise to be a great show. And to defend their colours, the champions abandoned their uniform for the sports gear: they are all former combatants, war-wounded.
These out of the ordinary games have been initiated by Prince Harry, who is very involved as sponsor of the event. In 2008, the Prince served in Afghanistan and his ten weeks there that have marked him for life. After the immense success of the 2012 Paralympics, the English capital proudly hosts this new international competition. The athletes will be competing in nine areas of sports, from cycling to swimming to basketball, a unique opportunity for these incredible soldiers to show us what they are made of. The Great-Britain team is the largest of all the countries represented by far with one hundred and thirty sportsmen against only eighteen for France and 98 of the US.
The event has already made some noise thanks to several personalities giving their support to help gain more recognition and visibility for the Games. The competition is designed to help wounded soldier rebuild themselves both physically and morally, around a goal. They all have the right frame of mind, the ability to succeed, a chance to rediscover their competitive streak, the possibility to escape and to do their best. Enough to refresh those heroes through sport, so “bring it on”, as Brad Pitt said in his message of support.
The Invictus games send a stronger message than ever as 40 countries have just declared war on ISIS.
